Working Backwards has not only supported the creation of, Amazon Web Services, Alexa, and other Amazon powerhouses; it has also driven innovation at some of the largest global enterprises, including Asian organizations like DBS, Changi Airports, Petronas, and Astro. 

Course Topics

Customer Validation: Identify a target Persona, formulate Hypotheses and Predictions, and run experiments to validate them

Solution Validation: Define Pains/Opportunities for product/solution to solve, identify customer pain points with solution features, and test solution resonance

Business Validation: Use 7V framework to create to conduct financial analysis and make investor ready business plans

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand when and how to use Working Backwards to drive incremental or disruptive innovation
  • Use the 10 tools of Working Backwards “at speed” to complete Customer, Solution, and Business Validation
  • Identify and address common enterprise blockers, and how to bring leadership and other stakeholders with you on the journey
  • Apply the Scientific Method to product-market fit analysis and increase the percentage of successful products innovated per year
  • Build fundamental competency for customer validation and reduce time to market of product innovation
  • Design and staff a “two-pizza” team for innovation

Course Journey

Assessment & Evaluation

Participants will have a 2-day window after their course, to complete the evaluation and assessment. They must complete the evaluation and successfully pass the assessment to be eligible for their course certificate. The course evaluation and assessment will be conducted online.

Facilitator Bio

Eric Tachibana

Eric builds upon a 30-year track record in executive leadership, venture capital advisory, and enterprise intrapreneurship & transformation. He is an established global thought leader having published 8 books on technology development and innovation management and is passionate about working with senior leaders to implement broad, scaled change, while being recognized for his persistent focus on practical, hands-on execution. He thrives in developing great teams, driving them to think bigger, and working cross organizationally to deliver results.

For the decade prior to joining Korn Ferry, Eric was the Global Chief People Officer and APJC Head of Professional Services for Amazon Web Services. Prior to that Eric ran the APJC CTO and COO for UBS and Merrill Lynch Bank of America respectively. In those roles, Eric worked with boards and senior teams driving business results through corporate culture change, innovation, the development of entrepreneurial enterprise leaders, and operational excellence.

Most recently, Eric worked with Fortune 500 enterprises to tailor and adopt the Working Backwards approach to enterprise innovation. Since 2018, “Innovation Engine” spinouts have secured over 200M in internal/external funding and have generated a combined revenue impact of over 25B for customers.

Eric is based in Singapore, and for the past 30 years holds deeply rooted emerging markets experience in APAC. He is passionate in exploring ‘possibility’ alongside seasoned leaders and has led delivery to global MNC’s such as DBS, Globe Telecom, Petronas, LG, and Astro to name a few. He holds a BA in Anthropology from UCLA, a Masters in Science, Technology, and Public Policy and an MBA from the National University of Singapore.
